1862 LATE USE 1d MULREADY WRAPPER MAIDENHEAD TO LONDON, INCORRECTLY CHARGED '2'. Good to fine 1d Mulready wrapper stereo A17 used in 1862 from Maidenhead to 'R N Smith Esq, 2 Great May's Buildings, St Martin's Lane, London W.C.' with very fine strike 'MAIDENHEAD/492' duplex JU 23 62 at right. Mulready initially believed invalid for postage with manuscript '2' charge mark in black but noticed by postal clerk and crossed through. Postal instructions were to cancel 'Britannia' therefore Britannia 'cancelled' with two horizontal pen lines and a smudge of black ink. Unusual treatment of the Mulready which was not demonetized until 30th June 1915. Interesting letter discussing train times. (Ref 144517).
