1840 MAIL 'O H M S' EDINBURGH TO LINLITHGOW 1d BLACK PL.5 (SG2)(SD). Fine letter 'Exchequer Chambers Edinr' dated 8th July 1840 re 'Burgh Maills of Linlithgow' sent 'O H M S' to 'The Chief Magistrate of the Burgh of Linlithgow' with fine 1d black pl.5 (SG2) lettered SD, four close to fine margins and tied neat strike red Maltese cross of Edinburgh. On reverse Edinburgh date stamp JUL 8 1840 and very fine strike of the so called Mae West 'TOO LATE' handstamp in black. Scarce Official use of the Penny Black. (Ref 144512).
