1842 MAIL LEEDS TO NOTTINGHAM WITH ATTEMPTED FRAUDULENT RE-USE 1d BLACK PL.5 (SG2) NOTICED BY POSTAL OFFICIAL AND SURCHARGED '2d'. Fine wrapper Leeds to 'Wm Hurst Esqr, Solicitor, Nottingham' with four margined 1d black pl.5 (SG2) lettered KJ cancelled black Maltese cross but not tied to wrapper which has been noticed by postal clerk as attemped fraudulent re-use of a penny black and crossed through in black ink and manuscript 'used before' written underneath. Furthermore postal clerk has crossed through senders 'Post Paid' at lower left and applied very fine strike '2d' charge mark in black, postage due from receipient. On reverse 'LEEDS' date stamp FE 23 1842 and 'NOTTINGHAM' date stamp FE 24 1842. Karl Louis and RPS cert accompany. Probably one of the finest attempted fraudulent re-use covers we have seen.
