CIRCA 1850 VALENTINE 'OCEAN PENNY POSTAGE' ORIGINAL FRONT ONLY POSTALLY USED SCOTLAND TO PORTSEA, HANTS. Circa 1850 front only, slightly reduced at foot James Valentine 'OCEAN PENNY POSTAGE' design from Scotland to 'Mr D Maxwell, 55 Princes George's St, Portsea, Hants' with 1d imperforate (SG8) lettered IG, touched at right otherwise good margins and clearly tied Scottish numeral cancellation. Envelope promoting Ocean Penny Postage, at upper left image apparently of Mercury within a frame inscribed 'OCEAN POSTAGE'. At centre is a dove with an olive branch over a pair of clasped hands. The lower part of the design is a sea view with Mail Packets and other sailing ships. Inscription reads 'BRITAIN! FROM THEE THE WORLD EXPECTS AN OCEAN PENNY POSTAGE TO MAKE HER CHILDREN ONE FRATERNITY'. (Ref 143855).
