1841-1844 THREE EXAMPLES STRANRAER, 'PEG-LEG' MALTESE CROSS ON COVER. Wrapper Stranraer to Inveraray dated 21st March 1844 with vertical pair 1d red (SG80) lettered ED FD, ED touched in places, FD four margins but horizontal fault affects but both stamps tied by very fine strikes of the 'STRANRAER' DISTINCTIVE MALTESE CROSS with 'PEG-LEG' at 12 o'clock. On reverse 'STRANRAER' date stamp MR 21 1844. Stamps with faults but one of the best usages of this rare distinctive Maltese cross (Spec B1tag). Also 1841 letter Stranraer to 'William McWilliam Esq, Writer, Wigton' 1d (SG7) lettered LH, filing fold affects but four margins tied fine strike 'Stranraer cross with Peg-Leg' and third usage 1842 Stranraer to Wigtown pair 1d (SG8) lettered RG RH lighter strikes of same cross, bakc stamped FE 2 1842.
