1840 SOUTHGATE CARICATURE NO.1 'PICKPOCKET' ENVELOPE POSTALLY USED LONDON TO NOTTINGHAM. A good to fine postally used example Southgate Caricature No.1 the 'Pickpocket' caricature from London to 'Misf Hardwick, Low Pavement, Nottingham' post paid '1' in cash and fine strike London 'PAID' date stamp 25 JU 1840. Small tone spot at upper left and minor creasing. Envelope depicts Britannia with her right eye covered by a patch scattering messengers right and left. There are references to the war with China and on the right a postman is attempting to deliver a letter to a man on the gallows whilst below him a pickpocket is plying his trade. An excellent caricature, surprisingly Cassell and Hobbs record 56 used examples including this one which is ex Yates and Meroni. (Ref 143748).
