Letter from Llangefni, Anglesea dated Dec 27 1845 to 'Peter Ewart Esq, Secretary Standard Life Assurance Office, 82 King William St, London' with 1d (SG8) lettered PL touched at top and right otherwise very close to good margins and tied good if slightly blurred strike black Maltese cross of Llangefni. On front good strike 'Llangefni/Penny Post' handstamp in black (W1417) slightly enhanced, on reverse superb strike 'BANGOR' skeleton type handstamp in black within circle, star at foot dated De 27 1845, County Cat only records usage for this month. A second strike of the skeleton handstamp accompanies on small piece DE 24 1845. Filing folds clear of stamp, a rare late usage of the Maltese cross in Wales. Ex John Cowell collection. (Ref 143665).
