1878 MAIL EDINBURGH TO PEEBLES 1d PL.183 (SG43) REUSED IN 1943 WITH ORIGINAL USAGE OVERPRINTED 'CANCELLED'. 1878 envelope Edinburgh to Peebles with fine Queen Victoria 1d pl.183 (SG43) lettered JH cancelled fine strike 'EDINBURGH/131' duplex JU 1 78. Envelope reused in 1943 due to paper shortage, local usage in Sanquhar with King George VI 1d pale scarlet (SG??) cancelled 'SANQUHAR/DUMFRIESSHIRE' date stamp 10 AP 43. Original usage has had 'CANCELLED' handstamp in dark pink applied, presumably by the postal authorities. Unusual and this practice not seen by us before. (Ref 143630).
