1919 DIE PROOF IN ORANGE-BROWN OF THE FIRST BACKGROUND (LATER REJECTED) FOR THE 1840 ONE PENNY STAMP (SPEC DP8c). A very fine 1919 reprint die proof of the first background suggested for the one penny stamp, 36 x 38 mm in orange-brown on paper watermark small star (Spec SP8c). This initial background suggestion was rejected as it was considered too light with insufficient contrast. A rare item of exhibition status especially in this colour. (Ref 142973).
