Envelope used in London addressed to 'Mr W Hartley, 6 Southampton St Bloomsbury' with fine to very fine used 1d (SG8) lettered MC with four good to large margins and tied fine strike London '79' District Office numeral. On reverse London date stamp JA 15 1853. This pre dates earliest recorded usage by over a month, prior earliest date 4th Feb 1853, and is confirmed in Allan Oliver's Magnus Opus 'Life Span of the Printing Plates for All the Postage stamps Of Queen Victoria'.
