A very fine example of 'THE PHONOGRAPHIC ENVELOPE' with very fine printed text promoting 'Phonography, or Writing by Sound, is a beautiful system of Short-hand, the invention of Isaac Pitman, Esquire of Bath...' and 'PHONOTYPY... a system of Printing which contains a Letter for each simple and distinct Sound in the Language, so that by it's use, words may be Spelled exactly as they are Pronounced...'. Envelope designed by a William Gill of Brierley Hill, Staffs and this rare example addressed to 'Miss J Butler, Maiden Hall, Bennetsbridge, Co. Kilkenny', on front 'KILKENNY' cds JY 29 65. Envelope with 1d pl.96 (SG43) lettered PJ tied indistinct cancellation. On reverse 'GREYSTONES' cds JY 28 65 but precise origin of posting unknown. (Ref 142007).
