1877 MAIL APPARENTLY EX H.M.S. BITTERNE, MALTA TO PORTSEA 1d PL.179 (SG43) x SIX. Fine envelope apparently from H.M.S. Bitterne, at this time in Malta to 'Mefsrs. E A Seagrove and Co. Outfitters, 22 The Hard, Portsea, Hants' endorsed 'via Southampton' with two fine strips of three 1d pl.179 (SG43) lettered MB MC MD and LI LJ LK cancelled London 'FB' cancellations. On reverse 'PORTSMOUTH' date stamp JU 4 77. Apparently mailed in May 1877 via the Ships Bag per 'P and O Assam' which left Malta 25 5 77 arriving Southampton 3 6 77. Unusual. (Ref 144675).
