1742 MAIL HEXHAM, NORTHUMBERLAND TO A SHIP CARPENTER 'north Lieth' WITH 'NEW/CASTLE' TWO LINE HAND STAMP (NR452). Fine letter from Hexham dated February 14th 1742 from a loving sister expressing concern about the health of her brother, addressed to 'Hellen Adamson to be Left at mr william nicol, ship carpenter in north Lieth at the head of the narrow Clofs, north britain'. (A Closs is apparently a narrow lane). The letter was carried privately from Hexham, posted at Newcastle with a good to fine strike 'NEW/CASTLE' first type two line hand stamp in black (NR452) recorded in use 1739-1746. Letter originally charged '3', altered to '5' with additional delivery instructions 'to Mr William Nikel meartchant in the Lucenbonth' (Luckenbooth, Edinburgh). Very fine usage. (Ref 142025).
