1839 LETTER GAND (GHENT) TO LONDON WITH VERY FINE STRIKE 'REBATE/CROWN 23 OC 23 1839/F.B.O.' HAND STAMP (L298c). A fine letter from Ghent dated 19th October 1839 to 'Messrs Fred. Huth and Co, London', originally charged '4/-' but re-rated '2/8'. On front 'GAND' date stamp 19 OCT 1939 and very fine strike of the oval 'REBATE/CROWN 23 OC 23 1839/F.B.O.' hand stamp in black (L298c). Certain larger banks and businesses such as Huth and Co kept accounts with the Post Office, occasionally letters would be overcharged and when re-assessed were struck with one of the special 'REBATE' hand stamps, this example has been struck at the Foreign Office and is only recorded in use October and November 1839. (Ref 142026).
