1818 MAIL USED IN LONDON WITH 'TO BE DELIVERED/BY 10, O'CLOCK/ON SUND MORN' HAND STAMP (L708b). Good large part wrapper addressed to 'Mr Chester, N6 East Street, Walcot Place, Lambeth', on front very fine strike hand stamp '3' charge mark in black applied to mail from the country. On reverse, over flap, fine strike of the boxed instructional 'To be Delivered/by 10, o Clock/on Sund Morn' in red (L708b) and light strike London date stamp OC 17 1818. This hand stamp probably intended to reconcile the public's desire for a Sunday delivery, while not offending the religious establishment, by assuring the addressee that the letter carrier would not be kept from worship. (Ref 126341).
