  • Description

1854 LATE USE OF THE DISTINCTIVE MALTESE CROSS OF WHITEHAVEN ON DIE 1 1D S.C.16 (SG17 SPEC C1ta). Used 1854 die 1 1d S.C.16 (SG17), centred to lower right and perforation faults at foot, cancelled fine large part strike of the distinctive Maltese cross of Whitehaven (Cumberland). This late usage is well known and recorded by Rockoff and Jackson with four examples on cover recorded between 1855 and 1863. Apparently the Whitehaven 'special' Maltese cross was transferred to and used at the nearby town of Egremont. Very scarce. (Ref 134198).
