Description
1852 MAIL GALGATE, LANCASTER USED LOCALLY WITH 1D (SG8) AND 'GALGATE' UDC (LA440). Envelope used locally in Lancaster to 'Mr Jas. Clapham, Stone Mason, Galgate, Lancaster' with 1d (SG8) lettered HI, crease affects but four close to good margins and tied '436' numeral of Lancaster, it appears stamp was affixed after a cancellation was struck. Undelivered with manuscript 'Gone Not known, Left Galgate, address not known' and on front 'LANCASTER' date stamp OC 18 1852. On reverse fine strike 'GALGATE' udc in blue (LA440), late use of udc with County Catalogue only recorded usage in blue 1840 and red in 1850. (Ref 137003).
