    1850 LETTER LONDON TO 'Wick Wilts' 1d (SG8) REDIRECTED WITH SIX REDIRECTIONS IN ATTEMPT TO DELIVER. Fine letter from Charterhouse Square, London dated 12th Feb 1850 to 'Mr Thos. Eyles, Wick, Wilts' with 1d (SG8) lettered EH tied fine strike London '7' Inland Office numeral. First attempt at delivery additional manuscript 'Salisbury' added with 'SALISBURY' date stamp Fe 13 1850 then sent on to Downton, on reverse good strike 'Downton' italic stlye handstamp and manuscript 'Not Wick Downton' and delivered to Pewsey with 'PEWSEY' date stamp FE 16 1850. Manuscript on the back 'Opened by Mr Thomas Eyles but not for him' with further manuscript 'Not East or West Wick Pewsey'. Next attempt manuscript 'try near Devizes' but incorrect with manuscript 'Not' before fine strike 'DEVIZES' date stamp in blue FE 20 1850. A further attempt was made in Calne but again manuscript 'cannot be found' before fine strike 'CALNE' date stamp in black FE 21 1850. A final instruction 'Try Nr Bath' leads to correct destinion at Wick, Gloucestershire. Remarkable testimony to effort of the Post Office in delivering this letter. (Ref 143103).
