    1841 MAIL WAKEFIELD TO SHEFFIELD 1D BLACK PL.8 (SG2) CANCELLED RED MALTESE CROSS FEBRUARY 9TH 1841, THE LAST DAY OFFICIAL USAGE RED INK AS A CANCELLATION. Fine letter from Wakefield dated Feb 7th 1840 to 'John Chambers Esq, Attorney at Law, Sheffield' with good used 1d black plate 8 (SG2) lettered AF, touched in several places but tied fine to very fine strike red Maltese cross. On reverse 'WAKEFIELD' date stamp FE 9 1841. This was the last day official use of red ink as a cancellation, on February 10th 1841 black ink was introduced. Rare usage. (Ref 142373).
