1840 POSTAL NOTICE FROM 'GENERAL POST OFFICE, EDINBURGH, APRIL 1840' WITH MINT EXAMPLE OF PENNY BLACK SENT 'TO ALL POSTMASTERS' ADVISING OF THE ISSUE OF THE PENNY BLACK, TWOPENNY BLUE AND THE MULREADYS. A fine example of the original 1840 Postal Notice, 214 x 342mm, sent 'TO ALL POSTMASTERS' advising them of the pending issue of the world's first stamps, the Penny Black, the Twopenny Blue, also the Mulready covers and envelopes. Originally enclosed were specimens of these issues so that the Postmasters could compare them to examples that passed before them and advising them how to act if any examples were deemed forged. The notice also advises how the new stamps etc should be cancelled. This particular Postal Notice is from Edinburgh and dated April 1840 and at upper left is a fine unused example 1840 1d black pl.1a (SG2) lettered LK with four fine margins, from a very early printing, and from Edward S. Lees. Originally a vertical pair would have been affixed, at some time stamp 'KK' has been removed. K A Louis certificate accompanies which states 'about twelve such Postal Notices from Edinburgh are recorded bearing vertical pairs, another two (including this one) bear only a single Penny Black'. Nevertheless a very important document of exhibition status and a chance for a collector to obtain this key item at a lower price. (Ref 142023).
