1841 1D RED PL.13 (SG8)(BE) ON PIECE CANCELLED RED AND BLACK MALTESE CROSSES. Small piece with good used 1d imperf (SG8) from the very scarce plate 13 lettered BE, with four fine margins cancelled smudged strike of the RED MALTESE CROSS of Colne in Lancashire, alongside part strike 'COLNE' udc in same colour. Stamp also cancelled and tied fine strike BLACK MALTESE CROSS, presumable that of Bradford Yorks, underneath part strike 'BRADFORD-YORKS' date stamp AU 2 1841 in black. RPS Cert 145094 states 'used on piece with black Maltese Cross and smudged red obliteration is genuine. Stamp has been removed from piece and replaced'. Mike Jackson mentions the Colne red Maltese cross in his Magnus Opus, Vol 3 page 395 recording four examples between May 1841 and Dec 1841 not including this example. Very scarce usage. Ref 61416).
