1813 NAPOLEONIC WARS/DARTMOOR PRISON FRENCH P.O.W. MAIL WITH RARE 'E/xd JM' CENSOR MARK. Entire from Dartmoor Prison to France, La Rochelle ? part of address excised, dated 4th August 1813 from a 'Jean Braux' seeking news of his family after months of silence while he has been a prisoner, captured on board the American ship 'La Comete'. Letter charged '8' (decimes) and on reverse fine to very fine strike of the small hand stamp 'Exd JM' of the Dartmoor Prison Censor John Moore. A very rare mark, certainly the first we have handled or seen. (Ref 118606).
