CIRCA 1844 ANTI-GRAHAM CARTOON, EX PUNCH. Two pages ex Punch magazine, circa 1844 (280 x 210) entitled "PUNCH'S FINE ART EXHIBITION OF DESIGNS FOR NATIONAL STATUES." with engraved images of ten proposals including "MERCURY GIVING GRAHAM AN INSIGHT INTO LETTERS", depicting Mercury showing the Home Secretary Sir James Graham how to steam open letters. Graham had courted much controversy by allowing Post Office staff to open letters in order to monitor suggested Italian spies. (Ref 113342).
