1840 4D UNIFORM POST LEWES, SUSSEX TO RYE WITH MANUSCRIPT '4'. Fine letter from 'County Hall Lewes' dated 7th January 1840 to 'E. N. Dawes Esq, Rye' with manuscript charge of '4', filing folds. On reverse good to fine strike 'LEWES' date stamp JA 7 1840. Scarce provincial usage of this first stage of postal reform. (Ref 133889).
