1840 MATCHED QUINTET 1D BLACK/RED PLATE FIVE LETTERED DA WITH PLATE REPAIRS (SG2/SG7). Fine used 1d black pl.5 (SG2) lettered DA in state one (Spec AS25), four close to fine margins and neat red Maltese cross matched with two examples from state three in black (Spec AS28) with red and black Maltese crosses. The first with light strike red Maltese cross in grey-black shade (SG3) following the second repair, touched at upper right otherwise close to fine margins, the second example in same state (SG3) with four very close but clear margins and black Maltese cross, both examples show much thinner check letters and upper squares. Also used penny red (SG7) in state three (Spec AS29c), touched upper right and corner bend, cancelled black Maltese cross but MUCH THINNER CHECK LETTERS. Accompanied by good used 1d red in STATE FOUR (Spec AS33b) also lettered DA, very close but just clear margins and good strike black Maltese cross. The state four shows STRENGTHENED LOWER SE MAJOR RAY IN NE SQUARE. Although margins are variable a very rare quintet. (5 items). (Ref 141935).
