‘GB POSTAL HISTORY 1867-1872 – railways, overseas, used abroad’.
 

110. RAILWAY. 1867 fine printed wrapper from the 'Sun Fire Office' in London to their office in Peebles with 1d plate 95 (SG 43) tied London duplex AP/8/67 with good strike of the circular 'C&G/R.P.O.' handstamp in black of the Carlisle & Glasgow Railway Post Office. Some filing folds but attractive and unusual usage. (*) (Ref 57414) £45.00

111. 1867 mail Fairford (Glos.) to Sierra Leone West Africa. 1867 env. (flap damaged) with 6d lilac (SG 104), trimmed perfs at right, lettered ED tied '294' Fairford numeral, Fairford cds AP/20/67 alongside. Addressed to 'E. Locke Co. of African Merchants Water Street Free Town Sierra Leone W.C. Africa'. On front local handstamp '1' and backstamped Sierra Leone MY/9/1867. Rare destination mail. 112. GB USED IN PERU. 1867 envelope from Panama to Surrey with a pair of 1/- green plate 4 (SG 117) cancelled light strike of the 'C35' numeral of Panama. On front Peru 1d in red, uncancelled, and 'Panama/4 JY 1867/Transit' datestamp with London receiver tying stamps at foot. Unusual and very scarce usage. (*) (Ref 62105) £575.00

113. 1867 10d red-brown (SG 112) TO ADEN. Envelope (opened out for display and imperfections at right) bearing fine 10d tied neat London duplex DE/24/67 addressed to Aden, Arabia. On reverse Aden receiver JA/12. Scarce destination. (PT) (Ref 63654) £350.00

       

114. 1868 Mourning envelope London to Madras with 10d pale red-brown (SG 113) and 2 x 1d plate 81 (SG 43) tied London 'E17' duplex' AP/17/68 with partial 'Insufficient Postage' handstamp - rate via Marseilles was '1/1'. REDIRECTED within India with Indian 2 Annas cancelled in Madras. Good selection of backstamps etc. (PT) (Ref 63655) £550.00

115. GB USED IN COLOMBIA. 1868 wrapper Cartagena to New York with GB 4d vermilion plate 9 (SG 94) tied 'C56' barred numeral of Cartagena. Also on front New York datestamp and forwarding agents mark from Cartagena. Very scarce. (*) (Ref 62113) £400.00

       

116. MAIL TO ITALY/LATE FEE. 1869 wrapper London to Genova with 1/- green plate 4 (SG 117) and 1d plate 108 tied London duplex JA/26/69. Stamps paying 1/- ½oz rate via France and 1d late fee. On front boxed 'L1' handstamp. (*) (Ref 57055) £40.00

117. 2d LATE FEE. 1869 wrapper London to New York with 6d mauve plate 8 (SG 109) tied London duplex AP/26/69 with boxed 'L2' late fee handstamp. Stamp paying 6d ½oz rate, and presumably late fee collected in cash. Manuscript 'Per Union' membership from Southampton. This steamer was wrecked in November 1870. (*) (Ref 60075) £75.00

       

118. ROYALTY. Circa 1870 small Mourning envelope written and signed by 'The Queen' (Victoria) to 'Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Gloucester'. Privately carried and very fine. (*) (Ref 57912) £375.00

119. 1870 wraller London to Milan with pair of 1867 10d pale red brown (SG 113) lettered CG/CH tied from reverse by London 'R15' barred numeral. Lombard Registered cds in blue on front JY.12.70 with Italian receivers on reverse. Stamps paying 4d registration and 1/4d 3/4 oz rate via Belgium- rate reduced 1st July 1870 but evidently not applied. Very fine and attractive usage. (PT) (Ref 63628) £675.00

       

120. 1869 envelope London to Melbourne with 10d pale red-brown (SG 113) and 1d plate 110 (SG 43) cancelled London duplex' JY/16/69 - paying 10d ¬-½oz rate via Marseilles and 1d late fee with boxed 'L1' on front. Slight imperfections. (PT) (Ref 63651) £275.00

121. 1867 10d red-brown (SG 112) TO JAPAN. 1870 letter London to Yokohama, Japan with 10d lettered JJ and 2 x 3d rose plate 5 (SG 103) - one affected by filing fold - tied London duplex' AU/26/70. Stamps paying 1/4d ¬-½oz rate via Marseilles. Yokohama and Hong Kong receivers on reverse. Attractive and scarce franking. (PT) (Ref 63652) £475.00

       

122. 1870 THREE COLOUR COMBINATION LONDON TO SIENNA, ITALY with 10d red-brown (SG 112), 2d blue plate 13 (SG 47) and 6d mauve plate 8 (SG 108) tied London 'SE2' barred numerals with registered cds NO/10/70 alongside. Stamps paying 4d registration, 1/- postage via France and 2d late fee? Most attractive usage. (PT) (Ref 63657) £675.00

123. 2/- BLUE (SG 119) TO THE WEST INDIES. 1871 envelope London to Demerara, West Indies (Guyana) with fine 2/- deep blue tied London duplex SP/15/71. On reverse Demerara receiver OC/7/71. A good clean and unusual usage with stamp paying the 2/- 1oz rate via British packet. (*) (Ref 60436) £350.00

       

124. LINCOLNSHIRE. 1872 envelope Doncaster to Thorne (nr Doncaster) with 1d plate 140 (SG 43) tied Doncaster duplex AP/4/72. On reverse fine strikes of the 'Crowle Linc' and 'Thorne' local receiving cds' for AP/14 and AP/52 1872. (*) (Ref 62744) £25.00
