70. THE BLUE '422' NUMERAL OF KINGSTON (SURREY). 1855 envelope Kingston to London bearing SG 17 tied fair '422' in dull blue with matching Kingston backstamp MY/14/1855 in same shade. Manuscript 'More to pay' with handstamp '2' alongside. Slight imperfections but A VERY SCARCE COLOURED CANCEL. Also second cover with Kingston handstruck '1' in red 23/JU/1840. 71. CRIMEAN WAR. 1855 envelope from St. Neots (Cornwall) to 'Lt. Colonel Cox Coldstream Guards British Army Balaclava Crimea' endorsed 'via Marseilles' with strip of 3 die II 1d stars (SG 21) plate 12 lettered AH-AJ tied '463' of Liskeard. On front 'St. Neots' udc in black. Backstamped Liskeard OC/26/1855. (*) (Ref 51733) £275.00

       

72. CRIMEAN WAR. 1855 letter (no envelope) written on board 'HMS Firefly off Nargen (Baltic Sea) NOV/10/1855'. Contents, part missing?, detail fascinating ship movements and also the exteme boredom and poor weather in maintaining the blockade of Reval. Writer also refers to a meeting with a local Estonian and his transactions with him. Very interesting. (*) (Ref 51729) £175.00

73. HULL SPOON (RA 42). 1855 envelope Barnston to Newark bearing two examples of die II 1d stars plate 1 S.C.16 (SG 21) lettered MB and ME tied good to fine strikes of the Hill Spoon 14/NO/1855 Code E. On reverse 'Barston' udc in blue-green. (*) (Ref 46124) £40.00

COMBINATION COVER OF 1/- EMBOSSED (SG 54 cut-to-shape) AND 4d CARMINE ON BLUED PAPER (SG 63) TO MANILA (Philippines). 1856 wrapper Staleybridge to Manila via Marseilles with stamps cancelled '502' numerals of Staleybridge. Backstamped Manchester JY/9/1856 with Hong Kong transit datestamp. Remarkable combination and a rare destination. (*) (Ref 60748) £495.00

75. 1856 die II alp III 1d star RED-BROWN ON WHITE PAPER (SG 37 Spec. C8A). 1857 envelope Milnthorpe (Westmorland) to Tamworth with two fine examples in the red-brown shade on white paper from plate 24 lettered JG and KA tied neat '530' numeral of Milnthorpe. 83. THE RINGWOOD '120' ERROR OF NUMERAL. 1858 envelope, opened for display, Ringwood to Lymington bearing fine SG 40 lettered TE tied very fine strike. The number '120' was originally allocated to Bridgend but used in error at Ringwood. (*) (Ref 46820) £75.00

       

84. INSTRUCTIONAL/SIDEWAYS DUPLEX. 1858 envelope Gloucester to Italy with 4d carmine (SG 66a) tied very fine Gloucester sideways duplex MR/14/1858. Postage underpaid with fine strike of the 'Insufficiently/Pre-paid' handstamp in black with various manuscript postal charges. Some contemporary writing at left. Fine usage. (*) (Ref 55917) £110.00

EXETER CRESSWELL EXPERIMENTAL DUPLEX/MAIL TO INDIA. 1858 wrapper (slightly re-enforced) Exeter to The Punjab, Bombay via Marseilles with 2 x 6d (SG 69) tied fine strikes of the scarce Exeter Cresswell 'small-type' duplex' JA/25/58. On reverse' Whitestone ' udc in blue and Bombay receiver 27/FE/1859. Stamps paying 1/- ¬-½oz rate. Very unusual combination of stamp/cancellation. (*) (Ref 60755) £225.00
