28. PENNY POST HANDSTAMPS/IMPERF 1d REDS. Very interesting group of 21 items (10 pieces, 6 stamps and 5 wrappers) showing a good variety of different penny post handstamps with 12 of the examples partly cancelling the stamps. Adhesives in mixed condition but a most unusual lot. (*) (Ref 59746) £675.00

29. 1841 entire Arbroath to Dundee - on front manuscript '1' re post paid and fine boxed 'Paid' and Arbroath datestamp JA/5/1841. (*) (Ref 60031) £25.00

       

30. 1841 letter Bath to Newton St Low with fine to very fine four margined 1d black plate 5 lettered PA tied red-orange M.C. backstamped Bath FE/2/1841. Stamp in State I of the plate showing horizontal guideline S.W. square. (*) (Ref 50653) £375.00

31. 1d BLACK/MAIL BAG SEAL. 1841 piece used locally in Thurso with four margined 1d black plate 9 lettered AL tied fair but slightly indistinct strike of a circular Thurso mail bag handstamp. Dated within 27th Feb 1841. Very scarce usage. (*) (Ref 58264) £775.00

       

32. 1841 wrapper (left flap removed) London to 'Royal Victoria Hotel, Newport, Salop' (Coffee House?) with fine four margined 1d grey-black plate 3 (SG 3) lettered LI tied red M.C. Backstamped 18/JU/1841. Stamp shows characteristic WEAKNESS UNDER VALUE. (*) (Ref 55986) £295.00

33. 'MAE WEST' OF ARBROATH. 1841 entire to Dundee with manuscript '1' re postage paid. On front fine boxed 'PAID' and Arbroath datestamp JN/20/1841. On reverse very fine strike of the ornate 'Too Late' handstamp. (*) (Ref 60020) £40.00

       

34. COVENTRY MALTESE CROSS. 1841 1d pink from Coventry to London cancelled unusual 'distinctive' looking Coventry M.C. (not the recognised example) but with very thick lines, long diamond points and a flared inner cross (see page 83 of Jackson). On front 'Wolston/Penny Post' handstamp in red, backstamped Coventry JU/28/1841. Slight creasing but most unusual. (*) (Ref 59742) £295.00

35. THE DISTINCTIVE MALTESE CROSS OF LEEDS (Spec. B1tl). 1842 wrapper Leeds to Dewsbury with four margined 1d red from black plate 8 (SG 7) lettered MI tied fine strike clearly showing the distinctive outer loops. 36. THE DISTINCTIVE MALTESE CROSS OF LEAMINGTON (Spec. B1tk) ON RE-USED 1d PINK ENVELOPE. 1841 1d pink from Market Rasen to Leamington cancelled black M.C. with Market Rasen datestamp SP/17/1841 RE-USED and sent back to Market Rasen with fine four margined 1d plate 14 tied fine strike with Leamington datestamp alongside SE/21/1841. Most unusual usage, exhibition quality. (*) (Ref 59951) £1350.00

37. 1841 letter Forfar to Dundee with fair strikes of the Forfar 'Paid' boxed handstamp and '1' handstamp in red. Backstamped OC/7/1841. (*) (Ref 60029) £15.00

       

38. THE DISTINCTIVE M.C. OF BRIGHTON. 1841 1d pink envelope Brighton to Gosport cancelled good to fine strike for this M.C. in black. On reverse 'W' within circle local receiver (SX 249) and backstamped Brighton OC/7/1841. This M.C. on 1d red cats. £750.00 on cover. (*) (Ref 57397) £275.00

39. PERTH MALTESE CROSS (Spec. B1tt). 1841 letter Perth to London with four margined 1d red plate 8 (SG 7) lettered CD, fine margins but affected by filing crease. Stamp tied fine strike of the Perth Maltese Cross with heavy outerline. On reverse 'South Methven Street R.H.' local receiver and Perth backstamp OC/11/1841. Fine example cats. £300.00 on cover. 40. 1842 letter Arbroath to Broughton Ferry with manuscript '1' post paid and on front fine boxed 'Paid' and Arbroath datestamp AP/22/1842 both in black. 'Paid' handstamps should be struck in red. (*) (Ref 60032) £35.00

THE BLUE MALTESE CROSS OF MOATE (West Meath, Ireland). 1842 letter Moate to Dublin with fine four margined 1d red plate 22 (SG 8) lettered HE tied very fine strike of this M.C. in dark blue with matching backstamp DE/11/1842. Rare usage and only a single example previously recorded in February 1843. (*) (Ref 56812) £1100.00

       

42. REGISTERED MAIL/NORTHUMBERLAND. 1842 wrapper from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Stockton with manuscript 'Registered' and '1/4' (1/- registration and 4d postage) with Newcastle-upon-Tyne datestamp OC/10/1842. Slight wrinkle but a very clean usage. (*) (Ref 55055) £150.00

43. THE MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATION OF KENYON NEAR LIVERPOOL. The two 1843 covers, as illustrated page 138 of Jackson Volume I, showing the very unusual practice of the Kenyon receiver to cancel adhesives with manuscript before Maltese Cross was applied on route at Liverpool. 44. THE DISTINCTIVE MALTESE CROSS OF NORWICH (Spec. B1ts). 1843 letter Norwich to Blackfriars, London with fine four margined 1d imperf (SG 8) plate 24 lettered OE tied superb strike. Backstamped Norwich JA/26/1843. Filing fold well clear of stamp and cancellation. Cat. £1400.00. (*) (Ref 59954) £950.00

45. CROSS POST. 1843 letter Brighton to Rye with manuscript 'X POST' on front. Backstamped Brighton FE/28/1843 and Rye MR/1/1843. On front Brighton 'PD1' handstamp in red of the Uniform Penny Post (SK 226) in red. The 'X POST' referring to the coast route & not via London. Filing folds. (*) (Ref 59300) £85.00

       

46. THE DISTINCTIVE MALTESE CROSS OF DUBLIN USED ON COVER (Spec. B1tf). 1843 wrapper Dublin to Wick (Scotland) - inter-banking correspondence - with fine 1d red, four margins, lettered RF cancelled very fine strike. (not tied but clearly belongs when viewed from reverse) Backstamped Dublin NO/4/43. Very clean usage. (*) (Ref 59338) £175.00

47. 1843 1d pink envelope Edinburgh to Dundee addressed to The British Hotel cancelled very fine strike of the distinctive Scottish Maltese Cross. Backstamped DE/20/1843. (*) (Ref 60884) £55.00

       

48. LONDON NUMBER '2' IN M.C. (Spec. B1ub). 1844 wrapper London to Liverpool with pair of SG 8 plate 35 lettered HK/HL. HL just touched at lower right and envelope slightly soiled but stamps tied two strikes of this M.C. Most multiple reds cancelled number '12' in M.C. (*) (Ref 58952) £95.00

49. THE KELSO MALTESE CROSS (Spec. B1ti). 1844 letter from Kelso Mail Office to Hawick with 1d imperf plate 38 (SG 8), very close but clear four margins affected by filing crease, stamp lettered LA tied fine strike of this scarce M.C.
