Handstamps, unusual usages, Coffee Houses etc

17. 1802 wrapper Peebles to Edinburgh with postal charge of '4' and on front very fine straight line 'Peebles' handstamp in black. Handstamp in red NOV/1802/15. (*) (Ref 60002) £55.00

18. 1807 letter to Edinburgh, on front fine strike of the 'Crail' straight line handstamp in black with postal charge of '7' and circular datestamp JAN.1807.29. (*) (Ref 60003) £45.00

   

19. WILTSHIRE. 1819 letter to Shaftesbury dated June 10th 1819. On front fine strike of the 'Wotten-Bassett/97' mileage mark in black (WI 862). (*) (Ref 60574) £35.00

20. CROSS POST/IRELAND. 1820 letter Dublin to Fowey, Cornwall endorsed 'X Post' REDIRECTED to London with various charge marks and handstamps including Bodmin '237' mileage mark (CO 12). (*) (Ref 57566) £95.00

   

21. MAIL CARRIED PRIVATELY 'BY CARAVAN' from London addressed to 'Thomas Pickford Manchester' and carried by him. Left flap missing otherwise a fine clean example of privately carried mail without postal charge dated 21st December 1820. (*) (Ref 48947) £65.00

22. 1825 letter from The Temple in London to Settle, Yorks evidently carried by private carrier (illegal unless accompanying a parcel) and on front manuscript 'By Union 15/NOV/1825' - the Union presumably being the coach name. (*) (Ref 54685) £40.00

   

23. SUFFOLK. 1826 letter from Eye dated August 7th 1826 to Bury St. Edmunds with fine strike of the large-type 'Eye/93' mileage mark in black (SK 138). (*) (Ref 60572) £40.00

24. 'TENBY' UDC (W 2286). Circa. 1830's entire Tenby to Birmingham with manuscript '1/-'. On reverse fine strike of the Tenby circular mileage mark with mileage erased. (*) (Ref 44938) £20.00

   

25. IRELAND. Circa 1830's wrapper Elphin (Co. Rosscommon) to Dublin with good strike of the 'Elphin/75' mileage mark in black. (*) (Ref 59048) £35.00

26. COFFEE HOUSE/WHEEL TAX. 1831 entire Aberdeen to the 'Salopian Coffee House Charing Cross London', backstamped 16/JY/1831. On front good strike of the 'Addl/½' wheel tax handstamp. (*) (Ref 59064) £75.00

LONDON/POSTAL CHARGE ALTERATION. 1833 letter used locally in London with London handstamp '3' overstruck with barred Inspector's handstamp and re-rated with handstamp '2' with 'T.P/Coml Rd.Lambh' handstamp of the London 2d post. All handstamps in black. Backstamped OC/14/1833. (*) (Ref 59824) £40.00

28. RETURNED MAIL/POSTMASTERS' INITIALS 1834 wrapper Chard to Liverpool with Chard udc and Liverpool datestamp MY/19/1834. Manuscript reads 'Cannot be found May 18th' and on reverse postmen have initially their 21 attempts to find correct address!! (Ref 24282) £95.00

   

29. LONDON/POSTAL CHARGE ALTERATION. 1835 letter used locally in London with handstamp '2' overstruck by Inspector's mark and handstruck '3' applied in black. On front 'T.P/Milbank St' handstamp in red. Backstamped OC/30/1835. (*) (Ref 59825) £45.00

30. 1838 letter Whitehouse to Aberdeen dated 13th April 1838 with fine strike of the 'Whitehouse' straight line handstamp in black. (*) (Ref 60009) £35.00

       

31. 1838 letter Peebles to the 'Star Hotel Edinburgh' (Coffee House?) REDIRECTED with fair strike of the 'Postage to/Edinburgh/Not Paid' handstamp in black also 'Addt/½' wheeltax handstamp with various manuscript ratings. Backstamped MY.22.1838(*) (Ref 60024) £40.00

32. IRELAND. 1838 wrapper from Castledawson to Rochester, Kent with fine strike of the 'Castledawson' straight line receiver in dark blue with Dublin datestamp JU/4/38 and London datestamp 6/JU/1838. (*) (Ref 60550) £45.00

   

33. WATERFORD TO MILFORD HAVEN ADDITIONAL ½ RATE. 1838 wrapper (flaps removed) from Clonmel to London via Waterford with postal charge of '1/3½'. Backstamped Clonmel JY/4/1838 and Waterford JY/5/1838. Very scarce. (*) (Ref 59599) £160.00

34. 1839 FREE FRANK from Bervie to Stonehaven dated 8th June. On reverse good strike of the 'Bervie' straight line handstamp in black. (*) (Ref 60015) £25.00

   
   

35. CARRIER'S LETTER. A fine 1839 receipt dated 12th Jone concerning casks of whisky from Dundee to Balhary with unusual manuscript on front 'with a cask whisky', without postal markings. Seldom offered. (*) (Ref 54707) £45.00
