‘The 1841 1d red plates 14 – 45 – the Maltese Cross period’.
       

177. 1841 letter Lyme (Dorset) to Wellington, Somerset with 1d imperf plate 14 (SG 8) lettered OJ with four very close to good margins tied neat black M.C. Stamp with light enclosure fold but shows fine constant variety DOUBLE 'O' (Spec. BS3b). (*) (Ref 56080) £55.00

178. 1841 letter used locally in Edinburgh bearing a very fine 1d imperf plate 15 (SG 8) with good to large margins lettered PH and cancelled very fine black M.C. Stamp clearly shows BASAL SHIFT (Spec. BS4d). Backstamped DE/23/1841. (*) (Ref 48980) £65.00

   

179. 1841 1d red plate 17 (SG 8). Very fine used lettered SF with four margins cancelled fine black M.C. Stamp shows BASAL SHIFT (Spec. BS6d). (*) (Ref 58447) £55.00

180. 1841 1d red plate 19 (SG 8). A very fine used example lettered PD with four close to good margins cancelled very fine Scottish M.C. (*) (Ref 50824) £45.00

   

181. 1841 1d red plate 21 (SG 8). A good used example lettered ML with four very close but clear margins cancelled black M.C. Stamp shows the excellent variety CORRECTED CHECK LETTERS 'M' OVER 'K' (Spec. BS10c). (*) (Ref 58451) £45.00

182. 1842 die I 1d imperf plate 23 (SG 8) EARLIEST RECORDED DATE OF USE. Large part wrapper from London to Darlington dated within 15th March 1842 with four margined example (very close margins and small corner bend) tied very fine black M.C. Backstamped London MR/15/1842 and Darlington MR/16/1842. Filing fold clear of stamp. Statham records this as earliest recorded usage. (*) (Ref 53648) £375.00

   

183. 1843 wrapper from Alnwick addressed to 'Revd. Elijah Hoole, Weslyan Mission House, Bishopsgate Street, within London' with 1d imperf plate 24 (SG 8) lettered JG close but clear to good margins tied black M.C. Backstamped Alnwick FE/3/1843. (*) (Ref 56052) £45.00

184. LONDON NUMBER '8' IN MALTESE CROSS (Spec. B1uh). A good four margined 1d red plate 28 lettered TL in State II (Spec. BS17e) with good four margins cancelled fine large part upright strike. Stamp with corner bend but shows State II characteristics - much thinner check letters. State II cats. £190.00. (*) (Ref 58471) £125.00

   

185. 1843 1d plate 33 PA STATE II (SG 8 Spec. BS22g). A good used example with four good to very large margins cancelled Dublin M.C. Small surface rubb at upper left but stamp clearly shows THINNER CHECK LETTERS and DOUBLING OF IMPRESSION at lower right. Ex. Maximus collection. (*) (Ref 57319) £450.00

186. 1844 letter Glasgow to Barrhead with very fine 1d imperf plate 34 in deep red-brown on very blued paper (SG 8a) lettered RL with guide dot S.E. square, large margins, tied fine Glasgow M.C. Backstamped Glasgow JU/8/1844. 'RL' one of the missing Imprimaturs on this plate. (*) (Ref 49877) £60.00

   

187. LONDON NUMBER '4' IN MALTESE CROSS (Spec. B1ud). 1843 1d imperf plate 35 - good to fine used lettered TA with four very close to large margins tied to small piece by very fine practically complete upright strike. TA plate 35 missing Imprimatur. Cat. £400.00. (*) (Ref 52744) £225.00

188. 1843 die I 1d imperf plate 41 (SG 8). A superb o.g. example lettered KL with four good to large margins and fine colour. Shows constant variety DOT IN 'L' SQUARE (Fisher). Scarce plate in mint condition. (*) (Ref 44975) £275.00

   

189. 1844 wrapper Tain to Edinburgh with 1d imperf plate 41 (SG 8) lettered IL with four very close to good four margins tied black M.C. and showing good re-entry marks (Spec. BS26Db). Backstamped Tain MY/14/1844. (*) (Ref 56081) £85.00

190. 1844 letter Bishops Stortford to Hertford with four margined 1d imperf plate 45 (SG 8) lettered LK with close to good margins tied black M.C. clear of Queen's profile.
