‘The Mulready, the Caricatures etc’.
       

86. SIGNATURE OF WILLIAM MULREADY. A fine letter (without envelope) written and signed by Mulready dated 18th July 1833. Letter discusses a picture for which Mulready quotes 250 guineas, presumably to engrave the plate? (*) (Ref 59413) £475.00

87. 1d MULREADY ENVELOPE USED ON THE FIRST SUNDAY 10th MAY 1840. A used example, some damage and imperfections, from Southampton to Barnet, Middx cancelled red M.C. and on front fair strike of the 'Hamble/Penny Post' handstamp in black (HA 492). Backstamped 'Southampton MY/10/1840/PyPost'. RPS cert. 28611 (1946). Fine used cats. £15,000.00. (*) (Ref 59418) £1500.00

     

88. MULREADY ADVERT/AYRSHIRE. A good to fine Mulready wrapper from Ayr to Kilmarnock, slight creasing, cancelled black M.C. Backstamped Kilmarnock MR/17/1842. Within is the Ayr 'Stamp & Tax Office' advert (Spec. MA202c). Very scarce. (*) (Ref 59545) £395.00

89. 1d MULREADY WRAPPER - NUMBER '7' IN MALTESE CROSS. A good example used locally in London (Stereo A64), slight creasing, cancelled very fine to superb 'No.7' in Maltese Cross. Backstamped London OC/2/1843. Fine and very scarce usage. Cat. £2750.00. (*) (Ref 59402) £1750.00

     

90. POSTALLY USED REPRODUCTION OF THE 2d MULREADY. A fine example, slight creasing, of an envelope believed produced by the stamp dealers, Alfred Smith & Son. franked with 1857 1d star (SG 40) lettered RD from Bath to London and addressed to the philatelist, C.W. Viner. Stamp tied Bath duplex JA/13/63. Backstamped London JA/14/63. Very scarce and only the second example we have seen. (*) (Ref 59412) £450.00

91. R.W. HUME CARICATURE. A fine unused example of this superb caricature, very small thin spot, caricature depicts a scarecrow instead of Britannia seated above an egg-shaped device with the outline of the Union flag within with illustrations around and on reverse, references to China etc. Rarely offered. (*) (Ref 59404) £750.00

     

92. THOMAS WHITE CARICTURE. An example of his caricature in broadsheet format (190x228mm), usual imperfections but very seldom offered. (*) (Ref 59397) £375.00

93. THACKERAY CARICATURES. Fine examples printed before and after plate defacement. Only 120 of each believed to have been printed. Fine pair. (*) (Ref 59406) £250.00


94. MULREADY - PUNCH'S ANTI-GRAHAM ENVELOPE IN BLUE. An example of this popular caricature based upon the Mulready envelope, designed by Leech and concerning Sir James Graham, The Home Secretary, who was able to open and examine letters to or from suspected persons. Some imperfections including toning and addressed but unposted - possibly delivered privately. (*) (Ref 59414) £225.00

96. SPOONER NUMBER '2'. A very fine unused example of the original caricature. (*) (Ref 59395) £275.00

97. SPOONER NUMBER '9' - HAND-COLOURED ORIGINAL. A very fine example of this attractive envelope which refers to postal matters. (*) (Ref 59400) £375.00

   

98. SPOONER NUMBER '10' CARICATURE. A good unused example of the number '10' - Hunting envelope - minor imperfections incl. very slight split at upper left but attractively hand-coloured. (*) (Ref 59399) £375.00

99. SOUTHGATE CARICATURE NUMBER '1'. A fine unused example of the lithograph reprint showing Britannia with eye patch. Caricature addressed which looks contemporary but unposted. (*) (Ref 59429) £125.00

       

100. SOUTHGATE CARICATURE NUMBER '5' Litho reprint (circa 1890). Unused example, slight toning - depicting characters from Charles Dickens. (*) (Ref 59430) £55.00

101. POSTAL STATIONERY ADVERTISING. Queen Victoria ½d orange die with 'Savory & Moore/London' advertising ring in vermilion. Superb unused example. (*) (Ref 59547) £225.00
