1848 RETALIATORY RATE MAIL LONDON TO PENNSYLVANIA WITH '34' US CHARGE MARK IN RED. Envelope, slightly trimmed at right and small part missing on reverse from London to Pennsylvania, North America, on front good strike 'Crawford-St' London receiver's hand stamp in black (L514) and London 'PAID' date stamp 14 JY 1848 with manuscript '1/-' paid in cash. On front fine strike US '34' charge mark in red applied during the 'Retaliatory Rate' period following a disagreement between the British and US Post Offices after a unilateral decision by the British Post Office to treat prepaid American mail as unpaid. In response the US Post Office surcharged mail and this hand stamp included 24 cents charge. (Ref 131456).
