Used 1d Mulready envelope, Stereo A146 from Stranraer to 'James Stewart Esqre of Cairnsmore, Cairnsmore House, Newton Stewart', Mulready toned but cancelled good strike of the distinctive 'peg-leg' Maltese cross of Stranraer. On reverse 'STRANRAER' date stamp MY 27 1841. Rockoff and Jackson record ten examples of this cross, including this example, the only recorded usage on a 1d Mulready and the earliest confirmed usage.
