  • Description

1857 LATE USE OF THE DISTINCTIVE MALTESE CROSS OF WHITEHAVEN ON DIE 2 1D (SG40 SPEC C10ta). Used 1857 die 2 1d rose-red on white paper (SG40) lettered QH, perforations trimmed at left and cancelled good part strike of the distinctive Maltese cross of Whitehaven (Cumberland). This late usage is well known and recorded by Rockoff and Jackson with four examples on cover recorded between 1855 and 1863. Apparently the Whitehaven 'special' Maltese cross was transferred to and used at the nearby town of Egremont. Very scarce. (Ref 134199).
